Current SAIS Membership Statistics

As of September, 2009, SAIS has 338 member schools from 11 southeastern states, the Caribbean, and Latin America, making SAIS one of the largest regional independent school associations in the country.  SAIS represents over 180,000 students.

SAIS Member Schools by Grade Levels:

Secular vs. Non-Secular:  Of member schools, 56% are secular and 44% are non-secular.   For the non-secular schools, religious affiliations are as follows:

  • 44%  Christian-Non-denominational
  • 24%  Catholic
  • 23%  Episcopal
  • 6%    Jewish
  • 3%    Quaker

Co-Ed vs. Single-Sex:  While 94% of SAIS member schools are co-educational, 3% are boys-only and 3% are girls-only.

Old vs. New:  The oldest school was founded in 1728; the newest school was founded in 2007.  The smallest school in our membership has 7 students enrolled; the largest has over 2,900 students.  Total enrollment in SAIS member schools is over 180,000 students.

Day vs. Boarding:  92% of SAIS members are day schools; 7% offer day and boarding; and 1% are boarding-only schools.

Other Associations:  SAIS member schools are also active in other independent school organizations:  50% are also members of NAIS (www.nais.org) and 79% are members of their state independent school associations.
