Millennials challenge today’s educators in many ways. They have been criticized for an inability to communicate, a penchant for video games and other “screens,” and a sense of entitlement. Not so fast, says John Zogby, author and keynote speaker at the 2016 SAIS Annual Conference. Through his work and research, and his own parenting experience, Zogby will present valuable information for schools that are teaching millennials today.

“This is an age cohort that is very different from the rest of us,” Zogby said. “I’m a missionary for millennials.”

Some of the positive qualities about millennials that Zogby outlines in his book The First Globals: Understanding, Managing, and Unleashing Our Millennial Generation are that Americans born between 1979 and 1994 are independent and open to change, they are problem-solvers, and they are less concerned about titles.

“They all got trophies as kids for performance,” Zogby said. “The up side is that we taught them the value of a team. If they see a problem, it needs to be solved immediately and not kicked up the chain of command.”

Because of their relationship with technology, this generation is in touch with people all over the world. They live in a global society, even if only through social media and other tech-based channels, but they also enjoy world travel. They have the potential to work for international companies but they are searching for meaningful employment. “85% say they want to leave the world a better place because of something they did,” Zogby said.

For the past 15 years, Zogby has conducted extensive research on the millennial generation. He also has employed numbers of them and is a parent of three millennials. “There are serious implications for education,” Zogby said. “I can help outline some strategies and make sense out of what educators have already seen and where to go from here.”

John Zogby’s keynote address will take place on Monday, October 24 at 9 AM at the SAIS Annual Conference in Atlanta in the main ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia. Register here for the conference.
