In many schools’ strategic plans, a common goal in recent years is to add diversity to their faculty and administrative leadership. As schools search for candidates to fill open positions, they often seek the services of a company such as Carney, Sandoe & Associates to help them identify the best potential new hires.
The company has dedicated more resources to this area and is planning its third annual Diversity Forum in January 2017 in Philadelphia. Author and professor Dr. Cornel West is slated as a keynote speaker. The event includes workshops related to diversity and inclusion issues, a hiring conference, and sessions for school leaders about how to diversify their faculty. “The Diversity Forum has continued to gain momentum,” said Devereaux McClatchey, president of Carney, Sandoe & Associates. “It has exceeded all expectations.”
The company recently dedicated several staff toward international placements to assist a number of international schools now among its clientele. Carney, Sandoe serves a wide variety of independent, charter, boarding, and even online schools, with team members all over the U.S. and abroad.
A curriculum-related goal for a lot of schools is the development of a dedicated STEM or STEAM space. Sometimes schools call it an innovation lab while other schools may brand it a learning center; more often than not, schools also need someone to staff that space. Carney, Sandoe is helping many schools find the right people with the right experience for these new roles, often called Chief Innovation Officer. “We’re seeing all sorts of titles,” McClatchey said.
Candidates are finding new ways to stand out in a sea of competition by enhancing their online presence. Many include a digital portfolio of sorts and videos of themselves in a classroom. About 15% of Carney, Sandoe candidates have recorded a two-minute video interview using the company’s resources. “Educators still want a traditional application but they like the new materials,” McClatchey said. “However, the in-person interviews are critical.”
