Profile: Carney, Sandoe & Associates

As the face of the potential independent school employee continues to change, schools also are adapting the process by which they search to fill open positions. More than ever, schools seek female leaders and people of color to be their next head, division head, or director to serve their communities. Schools often turn to Carney, Sandoe & Associates to help them fill those important roles.

Coming off the heels of its first-ever Women’s Institute, held in Boston in June 2017, the consultants at CS&A have a wealth of fresh ideas for schools and job seekers. “We’re really committed to trying to help women and leaders of color find ways to navigate to the top,” said Devereaux McClatchey, president of Carney, Sandoe & Associates. “We also wanted to create partnerships between women to mentor one another.”

He expected 20+ people at the institute and instead welcomed more than 200 attendees who enjoyed time to network, connect with peers and mentors, attend various sessions, and hear from two keynote speakers: Lisa Lyle, head of Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School, and Becky Sykes, president of the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation. The company plans to continue to host the institute each year.

With a goal of recruiting more diverse leadership, CS&A was represented by Placement Counselor Seliat Dairo, who spoke at The Galloway School’s BOLD Summit in Atlanta in July. The BOLD (Building Opportunities for Leadership Development) Summit is for educators of color pursuing leadership roles within independent schools. Seliat presented a breakout session about the initial path to leadership. The company also is working on its fourth installment of the Diversity Forum to be held in January 2018. Author Tim Wise will be the keynote speaker at this event.

Every school desires to fill any open position, whether it is a teaching or administrative role, with the best possible candidate – the person who brings the right skills to the job but who also agrees with and will support their mission. With fewer people wanting to teach or pursue school-related careers, CS&A has hit the road to visit colleges and graduate schools to bang the drum for education. From the Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University to the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education, consultants are personally and proactively recruiting new hires on campuses across the nation.

“The shortage is an issue facing every school in this country,” McClatchey said. “Schools need to understand that they may have to pay more for the best talent and consider certain benefits that weren’t available in the past, such as more professional development and even housing options.”

And many schools have increased their professional development budgets in recent years to allow both veteran teachers and less experienced teachers to obtain training and even pursue advanced degrees. Sometimes entire campaigns have focused on teachers instead of new buildings. “In the ‘90s and 2000s, we saw a lot of money for facilities,” McClatchey noted. “But your greatest assets are your teachers.”
