Dear SAIS Community,

As you may have heard, Dr. Edward (Ned) J. Fox, Jr., passed away on July 29, 2018, in hospice in Charlotte, NC. Born in Charleston, WV, on January 1, 1935, he grew up in Galveston, TX, and graduated from Woodberry Forest School in 1952.

Ned was an incredible mentor to me when I came to SAIS in 2003 and has continued to be a wonderful friend over the past decade and a half. As many of you know from having been his friend and colleague for many years, he helped shape the organization that SAIS has become today. In addition to his work in starting the SAIS accreditation program, he also founded and led both our new teacher and administrative leadership programs in the early 1980s.

I happened to be in Charlotte in July for the SAIS Institute for New Teachers and was able to visit with Ned twice during his final days. Although he was suffering from the effects of his most recent stroke, at our first visit we enjoyed chocolate milkshakes together and he asked me about this year’s crop of new heads (despite his difficulty speaking). Unfortunately, his condition declined throughout the week. When I saw him five days later, he was nonverbal but still laughed out loud twice as I reminisced about some of his past teachings (including that the right time to fire a teacher is the first time it crosses your mind). It was encouraging and heartwarming to know that even at the end he retained his sense of humor.

When I joined the SAIS staff (which back then consisted of only Tom Redmon and me), Ned had authored a document titled Alphabet Agencies, the basis of which we still use today to remind us which jumble of letters goes with which group. I also recall my predecessor warning me that Ned would be listening to see if I pronounced “accreditation” and “preparatory” correctly. I knew then that he and I were going to get along just fine! How fortunate I was to have had him as a mentor, colleague, and friend over these past 15 years.

The memorial service for Ned will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte on Saturday, September 1, at 11:00 AM. For those unable to attend, it will be broadcast live at (click on the Live Stream link at the top of the page). His full obituary is available here.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the American Association for People with Disabilities or the Faraja School for Children with Physical Disabilities, based in Tanzania, Africa, a nonprofit in which Ned had a personal interest.

I would love to collect some of your favorite Ned stories and memories to share with his family. If you would like to contribute a note, please email to by August 27. Photos are welcome too.

With gratitude,

Lori Spear, CAE
