A recent discussion on the SAIS listserv for lower school heads focused on the type of achievement tests schools conduct.

Of the 17 heads who responded to the question:

  • Six test with the Children’s Progress Academic Assessment three or more times per year;
  • Eight use the Comprehensive Testing Program once per year;
  • Four stated they use Educational Records Bureau tests without specifying which assessment;
  • One school noted they monitor progress with the Aptitude Inventory Measurement Service in addition to ERB;
  • Three schools test students three times per year with the Measures of Academic Progress Test;
  • One school uses the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in the spring;
  • One school just started this year with the ACT Aspire test; and
  • Six of the respondents begin assessments in kindergarten; seven wait until 2nd grade to start the programs.
