Mills Uniform

It all started with pioneer Sue Mills, a mother of four who knew she could improve on the uniforms her children were required to wear school. The market held few options so Sue, equipped with a design background and the practical approach only a mother can bring, opened her first uniform shop in 1947 in San Francisco. Mills was the first to introduce colors, natural fibers, and embroidered customization to traditional uniforms. Before long, the store was servicing schools throughout the West Coast. While the way Mills conducts business today has vastly changed – featuring best-in-class webstores, dedicated retail stores nationwide, and on-campus events – the Mills’ commitment to integrity and excellence remains steadfast.

Mills Uniform uses only sustainably-sourced materials to serve independent schools from Honolulu to New York City. The company prides itself on maintaining a positive, respectful, sustainable, and healthy work environment and only works with companies that do the same. Mills maintains long-term partnerships with domestic and international suppliers: these providers are reviewed annually and must agree to Mills’ Code of Conduct that addresses child labor, environmental protection, health and safety issues, and disciplinary practices. Representatives from Mills visit supplier facilities in the United States and abroad to inspect working conditions and ensure they uphold rigorous standards for quality and delivery timelines.

What began with a single store on Sacramento Street, Mills is now headquartered in Sausalito, California, and led by President & CEO Suzette Mills Foley, the granddaughter of Sue Mills. The company remains family-held and committed to creating uniform programs that reflect the values of each school as it provides products and service that are second to none. SAIS is grateful for Mills’ exemplary service to independent schools and for the company’s support of our association.
