From high-level consulting to insurance and software, ISM provides comprehensive management support for private and independent schools across the globe.

It started with former teachers Rod and Anne Snelling more than 40 years ago. The founders of Independent School Management (ISM) began sharing their Ideas & Perspectives newsletter in 1975 to provide best-practice advice to heads, trustees, and other key managers of independent schools. As the work of running a school effectively became a more complex undertaking, perceptive school leaders recognized they needed more than a lawyer on the board and a good accountant to keep things humming along. Responding to that complexity, ISM expanded, refined, and advanced its consultancy to provide timely, research-based, creative solutions to the multiple challenges facing independent school leaders. Today, ISM is comprised of three different divisions and nearly 25 departments but adheres to the original core purpose of the founders: to advance school leadership and enrich the student experience.

ISM’s advisory arm offers an array of consulting services, having conducted more than 3,100 on-site visits with school clients seeking expert insight. Whether it’s an admission challenge, an HR conundrum,  a governance issue, or another need, the experienced ISM team supports leaders through the process of discerning a smart solution. Need to gauge the sense of the community on a potentially significant change? ISM has conducted hundreds of school surveys, customizing language to cull vital information that can be leveraged to guide effective decision-making. Additionally, ISM offers professional development and certification programs to ensure faculty and staff have the opportunity to sharpen their skills and reach new professional goals. ISM newsletters, books, and other publications provide a deep well of research for school leaders in search of solid information as they embark on new initiatives.

The insurance division helps schools puzzle through the array of options in the marketplace to create customized medical insurance programs for their employees – insurance plans that take budget considerations into account. ISM can also help schools identify and manage risk through reviews of school practices and crisis procedures that contextualize the current environment. The firm can also recommend insurance products to limit financial exposure.

Finally, ISM offers proprietary software to assist in two specific areas: financial aid awards and class scheduling. Use of these tools can streamline both processes, managing variables and specific circumstances unique to each school. To see the FAST Aid and ScheduLogic software in action, visit the ISM website to schedule a demo.

Mission-driven and student-centered, ISM is committed to serving its clients with the highest integrity. In a challenging environment, ISM stands ready to offer advice, support, and insight undergirded by comprehensive research.
