2015 Stephen P. Robinson Inaugural Collaboration Grant Winners

We are excited to announce the recipients of the 2015 Stephen P. Robinson Collaboration Grants:

· The Bodine School, Memphis, TN, will provide instruction in Orton-Gillingham (OG) methodology to Teach For America (TFA) teachers in the Memphis public schools. This partnership hopes to demonstrate the validity of the OG pedagogy when applied to a normalized population of students such as those typically taught by TFA candidates. The long-term collaborative effort will deepen the work of Bodine in refining its own methodology.

· Carolina Friends School, Durham, NC, will partner with Duke University and Peaceful Schools NC to help Carter Community Charter School become a Peaceful School, a designation that demonstrates training to minimize bullying and aggression and support child-centered learning environments. This collaboration will allow Carolina Friends School, in collaboration with Duke University, to refine the process of helping a school become a Peaceful School while establishing and growing a relationship between the schools.

·  McCallie School and Girls Preparatory School, Chattanooga, TN, will launch “Consequential Philanthropy,” a course where students will engage with non-profits and government organizations about the problems facing Chattanooga. The students will research and interview organizations they want to support, and disperse funds to those organizations. This partnership will allow students to learn about their community and experience the philanthropic process, while deepening the schools’ ties to each other and to the greater Chattanooga community.

· The Master’s Academy, Oviedo, FL, will support collaboration among math teachers in their region by establishing the Central Florida Math Educators. The group will share best practices through digital communications and hold an annual CFME Collaboration Workshop. This collaboration will benefit all math teachers in the region, elevating their field at a time when STEM skills are in high demand.

· The Westminster Schools and The Lovett School, Atlanta, GA, will launch “Atlanta 2.0 Urban Design Fellowship,” where students from each school will study how the design of Atlanta's public spaces impacts community development and work to revitalize Atlanta’s inner city neighborhoods through urban design. This collaborative effort will deepen the relationship between the schools and their community, while allowing students to experience a unique community development effort.

At the SAIS Annual Conference in Atlanta in October, the recipients will share their collaboration journeys during a breakout session. All recipients will also deliver a publishable paper to SAIS outlining the results of their projects.

When Steve was briefed on the volume of applications that came in and the remarkable projects that were proposed, he was humbled, honored, and at a loss for words to describe the depth of his appreciation that something so meaningful in his professional career could bear his name.

Grant applications for 2016 will open in October and will be due by December 31, 2015.  Recipients of grants will be notified during the first week of February 2016.
