In a school’s lifetime, its community members will celebrate anniversaries, successes, and, inevitably, the retirement or departure of colleagues. Decades-long tenures are rare, which leaves schools frequently filling vacancies for high-level positions such as heads of schools, principals, and advancement officers.

Many schools turn to Carney, Sandoe & Associates to assist them with identifying potential candidates – and have experienced great success with their services. “It’s always gratifying to hear how well a candidate has worked out and to see what a direct and positive impact that hire can have on a school,” said Devereaux McClatchey, president of Carney, Sandoe & Associates.

He and other team members visit about 350 schools each year; they include independent, charter, boarding, international, and, more recently, online. “We have many clients who are either partially or primarily online schools, but they still need the ‘human factor’ to conduct classes or do behind-the-scenes work,” McClatchey said. Interviews of teacher candidates frequently include questions about their online capabilities for blended learning or distance learning.

Carney, Sandoe & Associates conducts numerous workshops and conferences around the U.S. each year, including eight hiring forums in different cities. This past January, the company hosted its first-ever Diversity Forum (held in Philadelphia) and will do so again in January 2016. The forum includes workshops for people of color, a hiring conference, and sessions for school leaders about how to diversify their faculty. The company also will host its first forum in Florida this year and will return to Atlanta for both the SAIS Annual Conference October 17-19, and for a hiring forum in the spring.  “As an Atlanta native, it’s always my favorite event,” McClatchey said.

Their work does not end with placing candidates in front of school leaders conducting a search. Consultants from their Head of School Search Group frequently assist newly appointed heads and their schools with the on-boarding process, where – between the date of the head’s appointment and the start date – a number of transition-related issues arise. “This is an extremely important time in the life of a school that deserves special attention,” McClatchey said. “Often a search committee will think its work is finished once an appointment is made, but some of the most critical work remains.”

They also work with school boards on long-range and strategic planning, frequently conducting workshops on site. In meeting with boards and school leaders, they hear about the latest trends in education and what needs the schools are working to fill.
