SAIS Featured School: Christian Heritage School

Christian Heritage School, located in Dalton, GA, will be celebrating 30 years of providing an independent, Christ-centered education to the families of northwest Georgia. CHS is a college-preparatory K-12 school serving approximately 400 students.

With a focus on VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity), we understand the need for our students to have the tools necessary to survive in the 21st century. In response, we have incorporated entrepreneurial skills into our programs to ensure students are able to navigate any situation they find themselves in. Students have the opportunity to utilize these skills while participating in actual business models within the school. These business models are designed to promote the following three areas: academic rigor, humanitarian efforts, and revenue production to help fund the school’s financial aid program. Examples include commercial size greenhouses equipped with aquaponics infrastructures, makerspace creative centers for school and community use, and a working warehouse for the production of promotional items and ecommerce sales. Students receive real world training in creative and innovative problem solving for business application. 

To promote this learning style, we have incorporated innovative educational solutions. By utilizing the Harkness Method, we require students to engage robustly in critical thinking and then persuasively articulate what they conclude. These student-centered discussions enable them to make their own discoveries and draw conclusions while considering many different perspectives. Students participate in STEAM projects by focusing on real world problems they are tasked to solve. This culminates into a campus-inclusive project each year designed to meet the needs a recipient somewhere around the world. This year, a team of students traveled to Swaziland to build and install wind turbines to power aquaponics systems to ensure a sustainable food source for the community. The team also installed student-built computers to monitor the turbines. All of this creates a unique learning environment that truly engages the students by helping them connect their passions and gifts to help others.
