Independent schools today face a number of challenges in their operations: increasing fundraising, growing and maintaining enrollment, attracting and retaining mission-appropriate faculty and staff, and for some, recovering from natural disasters. Many schools have turned to Independent School Management (ISM) for their expertise in these areas, offered through workshops and webinars, insurance services, financial aid software, publications, membership, and consulting services.

Over the past year, ISM has hired additional consultants to address the growing needs of their private-school clients — which also include international schools. “Our advisory services [workshops, webinars, publications, I&P, and consulting services] has seen tremendous growth over the past five years,” said Ted Fluck, director of business development for ISM. Finance is a popular subject about which schools are seeking new strategies. In fact, a recent ISM webinar on non-tuition revenue drew more than 600 attendees. “Schools are really looking to decrease the gap between tuition and expenses without raising tuition,” Fluck said.

Another area of increased interest is international student programs. Statistics show a steady climb in students coming to the U.S. to study in K-12 schools, as well as the number of schools acquiring SEVIS certification, allowing them to enroll foreign students. “An international program can bring diversity to a school as well as break down barriers among students,” Fluck said. “However, you must do it with a long-term strategy and with your mission in mind. It’s important to be prudent about it.”

In response to the growth in international student programs and increased inquiries from schools, ISM has introduced new workshops and consulting services focused on assisting schools in SEVIS compliance and international student enrollment management. They also offer International Student Accident and Sickness insurance. They have been working with families and schools for nearly four decades and carry an outstanding reputation for advocacy in customer service.
