2020 Institute for New Teachers | July 14-16, 21-23, 28-30 | Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville

This interactive experience will equip new teachers with the skills and understanding to guide and support their early years. Participants will present two sample lessons to a small peer group. Guided by an experienced educator, lessons will be recorded and reviewed in the small group setting. Discussion will focus on strengths and opportunities observed during the lesson. New teachers will learn best practices for lesson development, parent communication, and classroom management. They will address anticipated challenges and difficult conversations through real-life scenarios and role play.

NOTE: Teachers transitioning from a public school with more than three years of experience may now attend the new Institute for New Teachers: Public to Private.

FACULTY:

Allen Broyles is the assistant head of school at The Children’s School in Atlanta. With 26 years of experience in independent school education, he has held positions that include administration at the lower, middle, and school-wide levels, teaching positions at the lower, middle, and upper school levels, director of technology initiatives, music and math instruction, and outdoor education. He holds an M.Ed. in educational leadership with an undergraduate degree in music and French.

     

Sheri Burkeen is currently the director of professional development with SAIS. She has more than 20 years' experience in education. Sheri has been a lower school classroom teacher in both public and private schools. She has also served as a technology coordinator and curriculum director in coed and single sex schools. She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in educational psychology.

     

Ed Fox currently serves as a middle school science teacher with Charlotte Latin. Ed holds a B.S. in geology and forestry from Sewanee, The University of the South, a master's degree in educational administration and supervision, and a second masters in geological and earth sciences. Ed is also the varsity coach for Latin's ultimate team.
     
Renee Prillaman is the assistant head for teaching and learning at the Carolina Friends School in Durham, NC. Renee earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and early childhood, a master's degree in education, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction. Renee is a lecturing fellow in the department of education at Duke University. She has taught with both public and private schools in early childhood, lower school, and middle school.
     

Jennifer Rundles is the associate dean of student life at the Darlington School in Rome, GA. She has a B.S. in chemistry and an M.A. in education. Jennifer has been a science instructor for more than 15 years and brings extensive experience as a dean of students in a day/boarding environment.
     
Matt Scully is the director of digital integration & innovation at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. Matt's classroom experience was spent with seventh, eighth, and ninth graders as an English teacher. His role as director of technology has grown to include the development, implementation, and assessment of new practices at Providence. Matt currently manages Providence's Center for the Art & Science of Teaching, Learning, & Entrepreneurship. Matt holds a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in educational technology.
     
Meera Shah currently serves as the associate head of school for teaching and learning at Carolina Day School in Asheville, NC. She has 15+ years experience in boarding, day, co-ed, single-gender, 6-12, and pK-12 schools and has served as a teacher, department chair, academic dean, grade dean, sustainability coordinator, and coach over the years. Meera earned a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from Brown University and a masters in teaching and learning from Harvard.

  • I left the INT with a solid understanding of what I need to do to get started and how to get feedback and resources to keep improving.
  • I think the institute faculty complemented each other very well and provided a nice range of personalities and presentation styles. They provided a good, relaxed, enjoyable environment in which to learn more about teaching.
  • This is probably the most helpful new teacher PD out there. So much is packed into two and a half days but it’s worth every second.
  • The most important part of the INT was definitely the videotaping. I was pretty skeptical about it going in, but it turned out to be incredibly useful to see myself teach, but also to see other people with my level of experience teach. You so rarely get to step inside of your contemporaries' classroom, so this was incredibly valuable.

From knowing where I want my students to be at the end of the year to creating a constructive, engaging classroom for my students to walk into on the first day.
  • My favorites were the hands-on things (for example, when they gave us a list of difficult parent scenarios and we had to brainstorm how to address them).  Also, the personal anecdotes from the instructors will really stick with me.
  • I enjoyed practicing teaching and watching others teach to learn new strategies to improve.  It also helped to play the role of the student, since it's easy to forget how new information sounds.  I learned that the one who does the work does the learning, so I will definitely step back from spoon-feeding so much.
  • I appreciated how the seminars touched on various aspects of the teaching experience, and how all of the instructors gave great personal advice from their own successes and failures. They also gave great advice about how not only to do a good job teaching, but also how to simply enjoy doing the job.
  • Listen and pay close attention to the comments from your peers and supporting faculty members during the videotaping, as it's very rare to get such valuable feedback from so many people all at once.
  • The feedback I received during my videotaped lesson was very insightful. It gave me a lot to think about as far as my strengths and weaknesses, new ideas to add to my lesson, and ways to improve certain areas of my lesson.
