2020 Institute for New Teachers: Public to Private

This program is designed for experienced public school teachers who are making the move to an independent school. Participants should have at least three years of teaching experience in a public school setting. Topics include the unique culture of an independent school, working and communicating within the school community, navigating HR/legal issues, and balancing new responsibilities with a healthy home life.

This program is being offered in conjunction with PAIS.

Sheri Burkeen is currently the director of professional development with SAIS. She has more than 20 years' experience in education. Sheri has been a lower school classroom teacher in both public and private schools. She has also served as a technology coordinator and curriculum director in coed and single sex schools. She holds a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in educational psychology.


Jennifer Rundles is the associate dean of student life at the Darlington School in Rome, GA. She has a B.S. in chemistry and an M.A. in education. Jennifer has been a science instructor for more than 15 years and brings extensive experience as a dean of students in a day/boarding environment.


Matt Scully is the director of digital integration & innovation at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. Matt's classroom experience was spent with seventh, eighth, and ninth graders as an English teacher. His role as director of technology has grown to include the development, implementation, and assessment of new practices at Providence. Matt currently manages Providence's Center for the Art & Science of Teaching, Learning, & Entrepreneurship. Matt holds a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in educational technology.

Business casual (erring on the side of casual) is always safe with us. We want you to be comfortable. Be sure to bring a jacket or sweater in case you find the meeting room chilly. We tend to skew cooler rather than warmer.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations received before May 28 via will be refunded less a 20% processing fee. After that date refunds are no longer available, but replacement registrants are welcomed.

Target Audience:  SAIS professional development events are designed for those currently employed by K-12 independent schools. Topics are presented from an independent school perspective and discussed based on that unique culture. As such, registration is limited to faculty/staff from SAIS member schools or from non-member schools meeting the SAIS candidacy criteria. Please contact if you have questions about eligibility.
