Leadership can be complicated. Myriad factors play into becoming an effective leader and learning to adapt to those around you. The 2015 SAIS Heads Leadership Retreat focuses on these aspects of leadership and breaks down the obstacles to remaining informed and connected as leaders.  This opportunity is designed primarily for heads of school.  Each head of school attending may bring one additional person - an assistant/associate head or a division head.

Leading a school is no easy job. Heads must stay attuned to the school’s mission, driving its strategic plan in uncertain times. They must adapt to the changing needs of the school, whether for stability or momentum. They must build effective teams, and juggle diverse stakeholders – parents, teachers, students, board, and community. Relying solely on intuition or what’s worked in the past can have serious consequences. How can leaders evaluate their own work and that of their leadership teams?

This question will be at the center of the 2015 SAIS Heads Leadership Retreat. Al Calarco from the Center for Creative Leadership will introduce heads to tested constructs for evaluating their work and their teams. Attendees will review leadership styles throughout history and learn to evaluate successful or unsuccessful leadership based on outcomes. A “whole system” approach to leadership will be reviewed, consider what CCL calls the DAC measures: the Direction of a group’s work, the Alignment of the different aspects of that work, and the Commitment of the group.

Participants will also complete a personal assessment, the Change Style Indicator, and discuss how to manage transitions and become an adaptable leader. They will explore what CCL terms “Boundary Spanning Leadership,” the ability of a leader to establish DAC among different stakeholders, and divisions for the greater good of the organization. Whether you are a new head of school or have held the position for decades, the 2015 SAIS Heads Leadership Retreat will equip you to be a more effective leader at your school.

  • Excellent. The conference was extremely well-organized and every effort was taken to provide an optimum learning experience.
  • It was great to have such a diverse group of heads together and sharing ideas.
  • The most important part of the retreat was getting to know the other school heads ... I got a good overview of leadership, how it can be defined, and what it looks like in action.
  • Well worth taking days at this very busy time of year. It was energizing enough to get me through to graduation and provided great ideas for planning for next year.

Thank you to ERB and Southern Teachers Agency for sponsoring the Heads Leadership Retreat!
